"Unfortunately I have been the victim of homophobia on one occasion, and in this case the people giving me abuse were gay people! Because I didn't fit in with their view of how I should behave I received abuse from them (I wasn't gay enough apparently). I think we need to remember that it is not just heterosexual people that can be homophobic. I hope this site goes a long way to combatting homophobia. Things seem to be getting much better already, but there is always more to do!"—Andy, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

UK Policing Organisation: Gay Police Association

Gay Police Association

The Gay Police Association (GPA) exists to:

  • Work towards equal opportunities for lesbian and gay police service employees
  • Offer advice and support to lesbian and gay police service employees
  • Promote better relations between the police service and the lesbian and gay community

In addition to our work to support gay staff, we also work to educate the police service and central government on all issues connected with sexual orientation and policing. This includes policy development; the investigation of homophobic hate crime; victim care; and family & community liaison.

The GPA works in partnership with police forces in the UK to ensure the issues of homophobic crime aren't overlooked, and to provide a quality service to LGBT people.

As a Staff Association, our primary role is to support colleagues within the service; but as LGBT police officers and staff, we have a role to play in ensuring that every police force takes homophobic hate crime seriously.
