"I live in Lewisham in southeast London and I feel homophobia is getting worse. I can't walk to the shopping centre on Saturday without being called pussy boy or batty man. It's getting me down."—Craig Tantrum, London, United Kingdom

UK Policing Organisation: Metropolitan Police Authority

Metropolitan Police Authority

The Metropolitan Police Authority exists to make sure that London's police are accountable for the services they provide to people in the capital. The Authority's job includes securing continuous improvement in the way policing is provided in London, increasing community confidence and trust in London's police and consulting with London's communities to find out what they expect from the police.

The Authority promotes equality and diversity within the police service and is working in partnership to ensure all those who live and work in the capital are treated with respect. We believe that working in partnership is the most effective way to achieve our aim of making London the safest city.

Members of the Authority meet regularly in committee to discuss police policy, monitor performance and recommend changes to deliver improvement and meet the needs of London's communities. The Equal Opportunities and Diversity Board (EODB) leads on all issues relating to equal opportunities and diversity within the Authority and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), including giving advice on the equalities and diversity implications of major policy proposals and initiatives and reviewing MPS performance data on diversity issues, including hate crimes (race, homophobic, rape, domestic violence, child abuse).
